This department, in union with department of paediatrics and neonatology, provides wide-ranging care of the surgical neonate, infant and child. From birth till 13 years, this department manages all surgical conditions in the child.
This consists of congenital disorders (birth disorders), infective, traumatic and neoplastic conditions, which call for surgery such as, cleft lip and palate, congenial anomalies of the anorectum, kidney, ureter and bladder, hypospadias, etc.
Conservative open surgery as well as endoscopic (keyhole) surgeries of the chest and abdomen are done here. Children have a predisposition to put different bits and pieces into their mouth, which can get wedged in the throat, esophagus or bronchus causing diverse problems. These are removed endoscopically using the oesophagoscope or bronchoscopes.
Hindrance to the urethra by a congenital condition called posterior urethral valves are treated by single stage primary fulguration the valves. Diversion is only done in rare indicated causes.
Besides surgical treatment, the department also runs an antenatal counseling clinic where pregnant mothers with abnormalities of the fetus detected before delivery are examined and counseled regarding their baby, the general prognosis etc. additionally, guidance is also given with regard to the management of this pregnancy and also further pregnancies.
A childhood condition called intussusception, which causes intestinal obstruction, is treated by pneumatic insufflation, a non-operative technique. This condition earlier used to be treated by surgery but now using this non-operative techniques majority of the cases are managed without surgery.
Accordingly the department gives a one-stop supervision of approximately all surgical conditions in the child. |
